Heel Pain / Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that causes pain and inflammation in the heel. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes, becomes strained and irritated. This can lead to a stabbing pain in the heel that is typically worse in the morning or after long periods of sitting or standing. Plantar fasciitis is often caused by repetitive stress or overuse, such as from running, dancing, or standing for long periods of time. Other risk factors include being overweight, having tight calf muscles or a high arch in the foot, and wearing shoes with poor arch support.
Fortunately, plantar fasciitis can usually be treated with conservative measures such as rest, stretching, prolotherapy, shockwave therapy and wearing supportive shoes or orthotics. In severe cases, medical interventions such as corticosteroid injections or surgery may be necessary to relieve pain and restore function.
