Fungal toenails are often a concern to our patients. While it is not necessarily hygiene-related, patients often feel self-conscious about discoloured and fungal nails. While fungal nails are treatable, they must be tested to confirm a fungal infection. This allows an appropriate treatment plan.
How are fungal nails tested?
Traditionally, to identify a nail fungus/dermatophyte infection, a sample or specimen of your nails is taken and sent for microbiology testing. This takes about 4-6 weeks to get a result and is expensive. At JS Podiatry, we use a Diafactory Dermatophyte Test Kit to identify whether a dermatophyte infection is present. This only takes 5-10 minutes and can be done during a consultation. It allows for an accurate diagnosis as well as a confident treatment plan.
