Cracked Heels / Heel Fissures
Cracked heels, also known as heel fissures, are a common foot condition that can develop when the skin on the bottom of the heel becomes dry, thickened, and flaky. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including wearing open-back shoes, walking barefoot, or standing for long periods of time. Cracked heels can be painful and can even lead to infection if left untreated.
Treatment options include using moisturizing creams or ointments, wearing shoes that fit properly and provide adequate support, and avoiding long periods of standing or walking. In some cases, a podiatrist may need to remove the thickened skin to stop the cracks from forming. At times, medication to treat any underlying conditions may be required. It's important to seek medical attention if you have severe or persistent heel pain or if your heel appears infected.
