Ankle Sprains
Ankle sprains are a common injury that occurs when the ligaments in the ankle are stretched or torn. This can happen from a sudden twist, turn, or roll of the ankle during physical activity or even from a misstep on an uneven surface. Symptoms of an ankle sprain can include pain, swelling, stiffness, and bruising.
Depending on the severity of the sprain, you may have difficulty bearing weight on the affected foot or ankle. Treatment for ankle sprains typically involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) to reduce swelling and pain. Strengthening exercises may also be provided to improve the range of motion, strength, and balance once the injury has subsided. A fracture and bony injury may occur in severe cases due to a sprain.
Depending on the assessment outcome, imaging may be requested, and you may have to wear a moon boot. Occasional surgery may be necessary to repair or reconstruct the damaged ligaments. It is important to seek medical attention if you suspect you have an ankle sprain to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.
