Achilles Tendonitis
Chronic pain and discomfort in the back of the heel or ankle may be a sign of Achilles tendonitis, a common condition that can affect individuals of all ages and activity levels. This condition occurs when the Achilles tendon, the largest tendon in the body, becomes inflamed or irritated due to overuse, injury, or other factors. Symptoms of Achilles tendonitis may include pain and stiffness in the affected area, especially in the morning or after periods of rest, as well as swelling or tenderness near the heel bone.
Treatment options for Achilles tendonitis may include rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE), as well as stretching exercises, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to manage pain and inflammation. In some cases, futher treatment with shockwave therapy and prolotherapy may be necessary to repair or remove damaged tissue. It is important to seek medical attention if you suspect you may be experiencing Achilles tendonitis, as prompt diagnosis and treatment can help prevent long-term damage and improve your overall quality of life. While cortisone injections are helpful in the short-term, they are well known to further weaken the tendon and predispose it to tearing or rupture. We see this as an absolute last resort treatment option.
